White metal bearing repair and rebabbitting

We refurbish bearing shells and other plain-bearing components. Preparation, rebabbitting, machining and inspection are agreed for each component.

A scope matched to the component

We review enquiries for bearing shells, half shells, liners and other components with a white metal lining. Assessment starts with drawings, dimensions, backing condition and operating conditions.

The agreed scope can include removal of the worn lining, backing preparation, tinning, relining by a method suited to the geometry, machining and the inspection specified in the order.

How refurbishment proceeds

We first review damage and drawing requirements. The backing is prepared for bonding to the new lining, while gravity or centrifugal casting is selected according to the geometry and agreed process.

The required machining follows relining. Where specified, non-destructive examination of the bond can be included in the agreed scope.

Information needed for assessment

Send a drawing or dimensioned sketch, lining and backing material designations, machine and operating details, quantity, photographs of the damage and the requested machining scope.

Inspection, reporting and acceptance requirements should be stated in the enquiry. Alloy selection cannot be based on bearing size alone.

  • finished dimensions and tolerances
  • speed, load, temperature and lubrication regime
  • backing material and required bearing alloy
  • required examination and acceptance documents

Standards and acceptance criteria

ISO 4381:2011 covers tin casting alloys for multilayer plain bearings. ISO 4386-1:2019 covers ultrasonic testing of the bond within its stated field of application.

The applicable standard edition, material, test method and acceptance criteria must be stated in the order documentation. Input-material conformity does not replace assessment of the finished bearing.

PROCESS

From assessment to a finished bearing

Each step follows the agreed documentation.

01

Assessment

Drawings, operating data and backing condition.

02

Preparation and relining

A process selected for the component and agreed scope.

03

Machining and inspection

Finished dimensions and acceptance checks defined in the order.
